《蜷川馬克白》改編自莎士比亞四大悲劇《馬克白》，劇作將背景設定為16世紀末的日本安土桃山時期，原著的蘇格蘭戰士搖身一變成為日本武士，勃南樹林轉化為櫻花樹林。劇中仿照日本佛壇的巨大佈景、漫天櫻花的淒美場景等日式風格，將蜷川幸雄完美地融合東西方戲劇傳統的駕馭能力表露無遺。作品自1980年東京首演後多次在海外巡演，於2015年以巨星雲集的班底重新製作，由著名演員市村正親與《阿信的故事》女主角田中裕子分別飾演野心勃勃的馬克白及馬克白夫人。
NINAGAWA Macbeth adapts the story of Macbeth, one of Shakespeare’s four great tragedies, and sets in Azuchi-Momoyama period of Japan in the late 16th century. The original Scottish warriors are transformed into samurais and the Great Birnam Wood is turned to a forest of cherry blossoms. Ninagawa’s ability to perfectly harmonize the Eastern and Western theatre traditions into visually spellbinding amalgams are accentuated by the huge butsudan (Buddhist altar) as the stage set and the scenes of cherry trees in full blossom of magnificent beauty. Premiered in Tokyo in 1980, the production was toured internationally and was lately reproduced in 2015 with a strong line-up of Japan’s famous stars. The ambitious Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are played by eminent artists Masachika Ichimura and Yuko Tanaka.
